Carpet cleaning companies: Don't let them sweep things under the rug!
Carpet cleaning companies are sometimes a last resort. No matter how hard you try to keep your carpets clean, snow and rain throughout the year, along with kids, pets and accidents can leave you with a mess on your hands... er, on your floor. Here at Angie’s List, we want to help you make the best decision you can when it comes to finding and hiring a great carpet cleaning company - so here are some things to consider:
Choosing the right carpet cleaning company - three quick points:
- Top-notch carpet cleaners will have truck-mounted equipment. In other words, everything is there with them to do any job at any time. Granted, there are some situations where the equipment needs to be taken out to get into tight places.
- Another thing you want to look for is if the method of cleaning is a HWE method (Hot Water Extraction.) This has been said to be one the best methods to use because it has the ability to rinse the carpet while cleaning versus the dry cleaning method. Also, fewer chemicals are involved.
- Is the company certified through IICRC (International Institute of Carpet and Rug Cleaning)? Experience is a great thing, but hard to prove, and this certification shows the company has been through the “coursework “ and has passed exams pertaining to carpet cleaning. Yes, there is such a thing, and yes, it’s okay to ask to see proof of this certification.
How long has the company been in business?
Although there are good startups out there, when it comes to cleaning carpet, a tried and true past is always helpful. Always look for reviews and reputation of the company you are considering. Some questions to consider: Does the company drug-test its employees? Do they make sure there is no drinking on the job? Are their employees uniformed?
Scope of service:
When it comes to carpet cleaning, it’s good to work with a company that does more than just carpet cleaning. Tile, upholstery and pet damage treatments go hand and hand with carpet, so using a company that can work with multiple mediums is good. But take note: If a company is offering duct-cleaning work, or other services outside their expertise, move on. Duct cleaning is for heating and air-conditioning companies. You need a carpet cleaning company.
Avoid bait and switch companies:
They ARE out there…the ones that offer to do rooms for a low cost, but then get to your home and take you to the cleaners with hidden fees and extra costs. Most carpet cleaning companies can give you an estimate over the phone, but likely won’t give you an exact price until they’ve seen the area that needs to be cleaned. Granted, there are generalities, and there are also special circumstances.
Another thing to consider and could be included in the price is the time of travel to get to and from destination, whether or not it was an emergency call or holiday call. But the main thing here is avoid companies that advertise a price and then stick it to you.
